Laura & Patrick on Isle of Skye

Laura and Patrick’s Scotland honeymoon photos on the Isle of Skye pretty much go down in history as the most epic couples photo session I’ve ever had the pleasure of doing. For a whole day, we drove around Isle of Skye, stopping anywhere that caught our eye. We got to take our time and really enjoy the beauty of Isle of Skye, and not just for their honeymoon photos.

A few days after Laura and Patrick’s incredible castle wedding, the four of us agreed to meet up on Isle of Skye at the Fairy Pools. Josh and I were driving from a cosy Airbnb in Inverness, where we’d been inadvertently waylaid due to a tire losing air. Laura and Patrick were coming from the Highlands, and we didn’t expect to cross paths with them until the Fairy pools because

Fate struck, and Josh noticed (as we passed them, driving like crazy people) that Laura and Patrick were right behind us. We managed to grab their attention and all diverted to a scenic overlook pull off nearby. It was pouring rain, but Josh had spotted a waterfall a little way off the road, and we all thought it was the perfect place to start these Scotland honeymoon photos. Thankfully, right around the time we reached the waterfall, the rain paused.

Not long after we pulled off and started climbing around the waterfall, it seemed that every other passing car wanted to stop in the same place. (Can you blame them? The place was incredibly picturesque!) Nevertheless, we outlasted everyone, probably because of the mud, and some of the most epic photos of the session were from this spot.

I’m pretty obsessed with the way the clouds cover the mountains in Scotland, and this photo Josh took (below) is the perfect expression of the Isle of Skye.

Isle of Skye villages

Josh really has an eye for the perfect places to stop, and we pulled off the road at the Sligachen Bridge (don’t even ask how to pronounce that – I’m terrible with Scottish names). One of the most charming things about Scotland, and Isle of Skye in particular, was the tiny towns and villages we’d pass through. This old stone bridge was beautifully situated.

As we were leaving, these curious sheep walked down fairly close to the cars, which I took as a certain sign they’d like to be photographed.

Isle of Skye Fairy Pools

Having those two unplanned detours out of the way, we headed off to the fairy pools, as originally planned before we’d intercepted each other. What was crazy interesting to me was how the terrain could so vastly vary between two places fairly close to each other on a map. Whilst the fairy pools did take a bit of time to get to, I couldn’t have imagined how different the stop would look from the places before and after it.

However, because of the onslaught of rain and the long hike to the Fairy Pools themselves, we opted not to actually go all the way to the pools. I will say, it was the weirdest stop of the day, as it was torrentially downpouring rain on us when we arrived, and mostly continued to, but the sun peeked out toward the end, making it look a lot warmer than it was.

Next, we found another beautiful little stop on the side of the road. There was no turn off point, and had another car come, I think it would’ve been a tight fit to pass us. Fortunately, Laura and Patrick were willing to be super adventurous with us. 🙂

We actually had to jump a fence to get to this hillside overlook. (And never has jumping fences been more worthwhile. I will jump the most barbed and dangerous fences for Scotland honeymoon photos, any day.)

After this, I got it in my head that we should shoot at another castle if possible. A little internet searching said there was one nearby, but it turned out to be a little too touristy. However, it was the perfect spot to stop for tea and form a plan. We were all staying at an inn in Portree that night, so we knew the end destination… but we’d also all seen amazing photos of a place we didn’t know the name of. Some helpful castle workers aided us in our quest, and we were off.

The Storr

Honestly, if I’d known what a tough climb it would be to hike up to the Storr, I wouldn’t have made it. The whole hike was a come-to-Jesus moment for me, life analagous, and certainly worth a blog of its own. Laura and I were not as equipped as the guys for making such a strenuous hike, but we, nevertheless, trudged forward like champs. And no hike has ever been more worth it than the hike up to the Storr, which we accidentally timed perfectly for sunset photos. Since words can’t do it justice, and photos might give a bit of an inkling, I’ll just let you go see those.

We might have all walked back in the dark, but this hike was so worth it, as was everything about these Scotland honeymoon photos.
