Kuethen Family +1

I love maternity sessions, but these are not just any Eastvale maternity photos. On Saturday, I had the immense privilege of photographing my brother and sister-in-law’s maternity photos (special appearance by the world’s cutest nephew). And it was a dream come true, literally, for more than one reason.

It’s harder than I thought it would be to write about the people I love the most. My brother and sister-in-law struggled for years to get pregnant with my nephew, turning to IUI and eventually IVF to get pregnant with my sweet nephew. Their first pregnancy was a rough one, and my sister was on bedrest for pretty much the entirety of her pregnancy. Despite that, we were all looking forward to doing Eastvale maternity photos when Koa was in her belly.

I’ll never forget when she was hospitalised for contractions around the 20 week mark with Koa, how scared I was for my unborn nephew and for her, and how much we all loved him before we’d ever seen his face. Koa was born at 29 weeks, before we ever had the chance to do maternity photos.

Two months later, when Koa was finally released from the NICU, he was still fighting through many challenges, prone to getting sick, and we never did newborn photos. So for this pregnancy–they’re last–it was so important to my sister-in-law that we have the chance to document everything.

Most pregnant women get to a point where they don’t feel attractive, and my sister-in-law is no exception. (Of course, we have all assured her that she looks beautiful!) But because this is her last opportunity to get these photos, I know she was willing to step outside her comfort zone. I wish more women would do this!! (Blog post for another time…)

When these photos came back from my editor this morning, I cried over them with joy for the pregnancy, even though it’s been another tough one, and for the little girl they’re expecting.

It was such a good reminder to me that what I have the opportunity to do is so much more than just take pictures. As a photographer, I get to memorialise joys and triumphs and struggles and sadnesses.

(Side note, I know I’m biased because he’s my nephew, but isn’t this kid the cutest?!)

So these are so much more than just Eastvale maternity photos to me. These photos tell the story of hardship and celebration, of realisation and expectation. I guess I even gained a whole new appreciation for maternity photos and the importance of them through this experience.

I can’t wait to get this album printed so we can add it to our volumes of family stories.

P.S. I haven’t shot in this super rad location in a while. Years ago, in a much rainier year, I did Maddie and Matt‘s photos here and called it Mustard Hills. Though there wasn’t mustard growing like crazy this time, sunset was still beautiful. Like many of my locations, I found it through the All Trails app. <3
